Encouraging people to live an active lifestyle is a key ambition of the Scottish Government. The Active Scotland Delivery Plan outlines the benefits of being physically active, not only on an individual level but also at a community level.
They say that “physical activity and sport have a transformative effect on communities, by providing opportunities for people to connect with their neighbourhoods and come together in shared activities which inspire and motivate”.
The Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility (RSF) fulfils that role. The £30m centre is a key landmark on the Ravenscraig site and one of the major successes of recent development activity. Featuring a football and sports hall with 400 spectator seats and an athletics hall, the facility is used by professional athletes and everyday gym-goers. Major events have also taken place at the centre, from championship-level boxing and judo masterclasses to national youth volleyball finals.
In 2017, the British Transplant Games was held at the RSF – with Ravenscraig Limited serving as a proud sponsor. Held over a number of days, the event saw 750 athletes take part in sporting activities ranging from archery and athletics to swimming and tennis.
